Functional training means training the movements you use in real life, so the strength you build in the gym carries over to everything else you do. At MEC Fitness in Peyad, functional training is the foundation of every programme.
What makes training “functional”?
Instead of isolating one muscle at a time on a machine, functional training uses movements that work several muscles together, often standing up and moving through space. We organise it around six patterns:
| Pattern | In real life | At MEC |
|---|---|---|
| Squat | Sitting down and standing up | Goblet squats, front squats |
| Hinge | Picking things up from the floor | Deadlifts, kettlebell swings |
| Push | Pushing a door, lifting overhead | Push-ups, presses, landmine press |
| Pull | Pulling, climbing, good posture | Rows, pull-up progressions |
| Carry | Carrying shopping, luggage, children | Farmer carries, sandbag carries |
| Locomotion | Walking, climbing stairs, running | Sled pushes, crawls, lunges |
Functional training equipment at MEC
Our warehouse-style floor has the tools functional training needs: sleds for pushing and pulling, sandbags, kettlebells, battle ropes, landmines, slam balls and open space to move.
Functional training vs traditional gym training
Both have their place. Machines are useful for targeting specific muscles. Functional training adds balance, coordination and whole-body strength that machines alone don’t build. Most MEC programmes combine both: compound strength work plus functional and conditioning exercises.
Who benefits most
- Adults who want to stay strong and mobile as they get older
- Busy people who want efficient, full-body sessions
- Recreational athletes who want to move better in their sport
- Anyone who finds machine-only workouts boring
Frequently asked questions
Is functional training good for beginners?
Yes. The movements are natural, and every exercise can be scaled down to your starting level.
Does functional training help with weight loss?
It builds strength and burns energy, and combined with sensible eating it supports fat loss while keeping you strong.
How is this different from CrossFit?
We use some similar tools, but at MEC you train at your own pace on a customised routine, with a coach on the floor, and focus on steady progression rather than all-out workouts every day.
